Partial and total hip joint replacement has enabled the surgeon to restore mobility, correct deformity, and reduce pain for many patients. While hip prostheses have been predominantly successful in achieving these goals, it must be recognized that hip prostheses are made of metal, ceramic, and plastic materials, and as a result no joint replacement can be expected to withstand the same level of activity and load as normal healthy bone, nor will any joint replacement system be as strong, reliable, or durable as a natural human joint.
